Light & Color on the French Riviera

Seeing the world through azure-colored glasses

"When I realized I would see that light every morning, I could not believe my happiness...I decided never to leave Nice and remained here almost my entire existence." Henri Matisse

It's sometimes difficult to believe that light can be so different from one place to another, but in the case of the French Riviera, well, ... seeing is believing.

The moment you step off the plane or train in Nice, there is a noticeable change in the light. Colors are more vivid, yellows more yellow, ochre now understood, deep rose sensuous.

And because the light here plays so well with color, all the towns and buildings are adorned, dressed up in their party clothes so to speak, showing off their shuttered windows amid a wall of shocking orange, the colorful buildings lined up like ladies at a debutante's ball. So pretty, so warm, so inviting, ...flirtatious.

I understand Matisse and his happiness with the light in Nice. I, too, could be happy spending more of my existence there. Go and see for yourself. The light awaits you.
